Edited by Heiko Becher and Bocar Kouyate
Springer, 2005
Call# RC961.5 .H435 2005

From Amazon.com:
“Health research in developing countries has many facets. On one side, malaria and AIDS as main causes of morbidity and mortality are a focus for clinical and epidemiological studies. On the other side, the need for improving the health care system in general cannot be overestimated. The book offers a survey of current and important topics of health research in developing countries. Special emphasis is placed to show that cooperation of different health research areas if of highest importance in future. In addition the CRSN (Burkina Faso) – University of Heidelberg collaboration is given as a model that allows high class research in remote areas of any developing country. An absolutely must for all who are working in clinical, epidemiological and health systems research for and in developing countries.”

Ecology of Predator-Prey Interactions
Edited by Pedro Barbosa and Ignacio Castellanos
Oxford University Press, 2005
Call# QL758 .E29 2005

From Oxford University Press:
“This book addresses the fundamental issues of predator-prey interactions, with an emphasis on predation among arthropods, which have been better studied, and for which the database is more extensive than for the large and rare vertebrate predators. The book should appeal to ecologists interested in the broad issue of predation effects on communities.”

JCR now available online!

Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

Journal Citation Reports on the Web is now available from the LSU Libraries; faculty and students may access (both on and off-campus) the JCR reports from the list of Indexes and Databases on the Libraries web site.

Journal Citation Reports is a comprehensive and unique resource that allows you to evaluate and compare journals using citation data drawn from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries. JCR Science Edition contains data from over 5,900 journals in science and technology. JCR Social Sciences Edition contains data from over 1,700 journals in the social sciences.

It is the only source of citation data on journals, and includes virtually all areas of science, technology, and social sciences. Journal Citation Reports can show you the:
· Most frequently cited journals in a field
· Highest impact journals in a field
· Largest journals in a field

Citation and article counts are important indicators of how frequently current researchers are using individual journals. By tabulating and aggregating citation and article counts, JCR offers a unique perspective for journal evaluation and comparison.

New option for people who have forgotten their library PIN

Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

A change has been made in iLink (for off-campus access to electronic resourcs) for patrons who have forgotten their PINs.

They can now submit their LSU ID or T-card number and have their PIN emailed to them. The PIN is sent to the email address in their patron record.

WRS — ASFA Biological Sciences and Living Resources

Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

This week’s offering is Biological Sciences and Living Resources, part of the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) on the CSA platform. Biological Sciences and Living Resources indexes literature relating to all aspects of research on aquatic organisms, with strong coverege of fisheries research. It indexes more than 650,000 records with coverage as far back as 1971.

The advanced search allows up to 9 keywords in more than 30 fields, combinable by AND, OR, or NOT. The results can also be limited to English only, or a specific publication date range. Full citations are given, including an abstract in most cases. A search history is kept of all searches done in a session, and individual searches can be combined and manipulated from the Search Tools tab.

In addition, researchers can create an account and set up search alerts to be notified via email when a new record is added that fits a given search criteria.

WRS — Biological Abstracts

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

This week’s spotlight is on Biological Abstracts. BA indexes more than 4000 biological science journals internationally, some of which are covered all the way back to 1969. It is hosted on the EBSCO platform, whose advanced search allows up to three keywords in up to 30 fields, combinable by Boolean operators, as well as the ability to refine your search based on publication date range, language, document type, and many other life-sciences-specific limiters such as disease affiliation, developmental stage, and organ system.

BA indexes records from all areas of life sciences, including medicine, botany, microbiology, agriculture/aquaculture, animal behavior, and many others. It is an excellent first step for searching any topic in the life sciences.
